Meet Meadowrock’s Gabbro

Alpaca Registry #32302875
Born August 2, 2013

Surprise color! Gabbro is the result of breeding our medium fawn Amber to 7x Color Champion El Trauco who is a medium brown. At one-hour it is hard to tell her true color but you can see she is definitely not fawn or brown. Look, a month later and after she is cria sheared, see all the grey on her velvety little body. What a cutie!

On the left, as a full-fleeced yearling and four days before shearing, you can easily see her fleece has a gray cast even though the tips have a golden hue. Now look to the right. This is her shorn “blanket” with the butt cut (interior, near skin) up and tips (outside, external) down. Now you can really see the golden hue. She is called a gray because of all the white hairs within her fleece. Here she looks like a Rose Gray, but her neck is a definite Silver Gray, see below.

Our attempt at a wading pool for the girls failed but it was entertaining to watch as they curiously watched Jim fill it. From left to right: Gabbro, Thunder (in the north pasture), Amber, Ruby, Topaz (2 months old squished between Ruby, her aunt, and Opal, her mom), Opal and Thulisa.

This is two months after shearing and everyone is showing their true colors. Now you can see Gabbro’s colors even better: her neck is Silver Gray and her body is Rose Gray. Her fiber will be milled into very lovely yarn!

Alpacas love to roll! See how Opal is covered with debris? We don’t wash or brush, it pretty much falls off as the day progresses…unless they roll again.
